Welcome to California Wildlife Damage Management (California WDM), officially known as the California Wildlife Damage Management EIR/EIS. Our mission is to provide clear, science-based environmental analysis of wildlife damage management activities across the state of California.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and Wildlife Services–California (WS-California), a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), are working together to prepare a joint Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). These documents examine the impacts of both current and future wildlife damage management (WDM) activities statewide.
Through this process, California WDM ensures that environmental standards are met under both the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
What We Aim to Do
The California WDM EIR/EIS is designed to:
- Provide comprehensive statewide review under CEQA for WDM activities carried out by CDFA and California Counties. This serves as the foundation for additional environmental studies at the county level when needed.
- Fulfill NEPA requirements by reviewing the activities of WS-California, including those performed in cooperation with counties, public agencies, and private landowners.
- Increase public understanding and awareness of wildlife biology, species identification, damage impacts, and management strategies.
- Develop safeguards to avoid, reduce, or offset potential impacts on California’s natural resources, including sensitive habitats, protected species, and waterways.
Why This Matters
Wildlife management plays a crucial role in balancing human needs with the preservation of California’s ecosystems. Our environmental review process ensures that activities are carefully considered, minimizing risks to the state’s rich natural heritage while allowing for effective solutions to wildlife-related challenges.
